Evidence of Liverpool's strong maritime heritage can be found across the city. The Merseyside Maritime Museum, symbollically located at the heart of the Albert Dock, is a celebration of this important aspect to the city's history. Displays of boats, models, paintings, ship wrecked objects, uniforms and more bring Liverpool's seafaring past to life and give a special insight into the city's important role as Britain's gateway to the new world in the mid to late 1800s.
There are a host of special exhibits, trails and free events for children which take place throughout the year (pick up a Family Guide at the museum information desk to find out what's going on during your visit). The museum's restaurant, Maritime Dining Room, offers a gastronomic experience, listed in the 2010 Michelin Guide, with views over the waterfront. Its Quayside cafe offers lighter refreshments and there's a shop with nautical themed souvenirs.
